Anarchism and Countercultural Politics in Early Twentieth-Century Cuba

Anarchism and Countercultural Politics in Early Twentieth-Century Cuba

$36.67

This is the first critical in-depth study of the anarchist movement in Cuba in the three decades after the republic’s independence from Spain in 1898, Kirwin Shaffer shows that anarchists played a significant– until now little-known– role among Cuban leftists in shaping issues of health, education, immigration, the environment, and working-class internationalism, They also criticized the state of racial politics, cultural practices, and the conditions of children and women on the island. In the chaotic new country, members of the anarchist movement interpreted the War for Independence and the revolutionary ideas of patriot Jose Marti from a far left perspective, embarking on a nationwide debate with the larger Cuban establishment about what it meant to be Cuban. To counter the dominant culture, the anarchists created their own initiatives to help people– schools, health institute, vegetarian restaurants, the after, and fiction writing groups– and as a result they challenged both the existing elite and the U.S. military forces that occupied the country. Shaffer also focuses on what anarchists did to prepare the masses for a social revolution. While many of their ideals flowed from Europe, and in particular from Spain, their programs, criticisms, and literature reflected the specifics of Cuban reality and appealed to Cuba’s popular classes. Using theories on working class internationalism, countercultures, popular culture, and social movements, Shaffer analyzes archival records, pamphlets, newspapers, and novels, showing how the anarchist movement in republican Cuba helped shape the country’s early leftist revolutionary agenda.

Is Inequality Bad for Our Health?

Is Inequality Bad for Our Health?

$16.89

From Publishers Weekly We have long known that more affluent and better-educated members of a society tend to live longer and healthier, state the authors at the outset of the essay at the heart of this slim volume. They aim to recast the debate about health care in America. Instead of just worrying about cost and access, Daniels, Kennedy and Kawachi argue that in order to deal with health inequalities, we need to remedy the problem of income inequality. In making this argument, the three academics (Daniels is a philosopher; Kennedy and Kawachi are public health scholars) draw both on broad-brush statistics (showing, for instance, that states with fairer income distributions boast better health) and on philosopher John Rawls’s influential theory of justice. Along the way, they recommend four policy proposals: early childhood interventions; nutritional supplements for poor women and children; changes in the workplace environment; and income redistribution. In a series of responses to this essay, several scholars–such as Marcia Angell, the editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine–take issue with aspects of the authors’ proposal, arguing, for example, that the social causes of poor health (wealth? occupation?) remain unclear; that their argument ignores differentials based on gender or race; and perhaps most potently, that their utopian plan nudges aside the doable but difficult task of making medical care more fairly distributed. Still, the basic point proposed by Daniels, Kennedy and Kawachi–that good health depends mainly on factors outside the health care sector–should prompt a more textured debate on health policy.

 Rosalie Bertell

Rosalie Bertell

$16.95

Dr. Mary-Louise Engels’ engaging book discusses Rosalie Bertell from a feminist, environmental activist perspective. It is a lively portrait of one woman’s commitment to sustaining a healthy world environment. A dual American-Canadian citizen, Bertell entered the religious order of the Grey Nuns, completed a doctorate in biometrics, and became an impassioned peace activist. This remarkable woman has been a lifelong fighter for environmental and human health, and an advocate for women’s participation in decision-making about war, peace, and the environment. In the 1970s, Dr. Bertell played a major role in opposing the construction of nuclear reactors, and in drawing attention to the health damages suffered by uranium miners and the atomic veterans of US nuclear bombing and testing. In Canada, her research furnished data on children’s health hazards, contamination in the Great Lakes, and the impact of pollution on indigenous communities in the Canadian North. Her investigations of environmental disasters–in Chernobyl, the Marshall Islands, India–consolidated an international reputation. This is a compelling account of an extraordinary woman who has still not relinquished her mission to make the victims visible. Dr. Engels captures the struggles and achievements, the scientific and political infighting, and the personal qualities that sustained Rosalie Bertell throughout a controversial career. Recently named by Planet in Focus as The first Eco-Hero, Bertell has received many honours, notably, the prestigious Swedish Parliament’s Right Livelihood Award, the Alternative Nobel. Her name appears on the Cambridge University List of 1000 Outstanding Women of the Twentieth Century.
